A thought for Blue-staters

There is something demoralizing about living in a Blue State these days. I live on the Upper West Side of New York City, maybe the bluest of blue areas in the country (Democratic area? Kerry picked up 82% of the vote in all of Manhatten - and Upper West is more Democratic than that). All of my representatives are out there fighting the good fight; aside from my mayor, and my governor (both of whom look to be in trouble this cycle), we're already on board the Democratic agenda.  So every election cycle is sort of pro-forma for us - we vote, we vote D, we win...and we have no influence over the rest of the country. Incidentally, I felt the same way when I lived in Chicago.

I thought about this over the past holiday season, when I noticed that Open Secrets keeps a database of funders, separated out by political party. And it occurred to me that there is something easy, obvious, and wickedly effective that we can do. We can make, at the very least, retail businesses pay for their political allegiance to Republicans.
